GROUND PREPARATION AND PLANTING:
Select ground that is exposed to the sun all day long if possible. The Gladiolus does best in rich mellow soil. Pulverize the soil thoroughly before planting and make a loose roomy seed bed at least six inches deep. Do not allow fresh manure to come in con- tact with the bulbs.
Bulbs can be planted just as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring up to June 15th. By planting at intervals you will have flowers in bloom practically all summer.
Bulbs should be planted from 4 to 5 inches deep.
Bulbs can be planted 4 to 8 inches apart in the row and rows far enough apart — 18 to 24 inches — to cultivate readily. They can be grouped, if de- sired, in front of higher perennials.
Water thoroughly when the soil needs it, particu- larly when the flower spike appears. It is best to water in the evening after the sun is down.
CUTTING: In cutting spike be sure to leave at least three leaves on the plant, otherwise the new bulb will not develop properly. If flowers are left in the garden pick off the lower flowers as soon as they wilt. After the flower has finished blooming cut off the flower spike.
DIGGING: Bulbs should be dug in the fall be- fore the ground freezes. Keep the bulbs in a cool, dry place during the winter.
